"First Man" is the fourteenth and final track from Camila Cabello's second studio album Romance (2019). Written by Camila Cabello, Jordan Reynolds and Amy Wadge, and produced by Reynolds and Finneas, "First Man" is a pop-rock piano ballad about Cabello's relationship with her dad while she is in a romantic relationship with a "good guy".

The song has peaked at number 94 on the US Billboard Hot 100, following the live performance at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

Background

The original version that got leaked in 0ctober 2018 included strings in the instrumental. A tagged snippet of the demo was leaked on October 6, 2018. Later, on October 14, two untagged snippets were leaked on YouTube, on November 8, demo of the song was leaked on SoundCloud. At a fan event in London, on October 2, 2019, Camila said she was mad that the song got leaked.

On November 2, 2019, Camila performed the song on New Music Daily Presents: Camila Cabello, a special live show from New Music Daily of Apple Music in the heart of Los Angeles celebrating the release of her new album Romance. On November 15, a track list revealed from a poster released by Target,[1] from Target's limited pressed edition of Romance, teased the track list and "First Man" is the fourteenth.[2]

Music video

The official music video for the song was released on Cabello's Youtube channel on June 21, 2020 in celebration of Father's Day.

The video features clips from Cabello's childhood with many of the footage containing videos of her and her father. In the description Cabello dedicated the video to her father.

Live performances

On November 2, 2019, Camila performed the song on New Music Daily Presents: Camila Cabello, a special live show from New Music Daily of Apple Music in the heart of Los Angeles celebrating the release of her album Romance.[3] Cabello performed "First Man" at the 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony that took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020.[4]

Commercial performance

Just one day after the Grammy awards ceremony, sales of “First Man” had already increased by over 68,000%, and that rose to over 81,000% a day later. In those two days, the track sold over 11,000 copies. The cut was also the fourth-most-streamed song the day after the Grammys. The track racked up 1.4 million streams in the 24 hours following an increase of 890%.[5] In the US, "First Man" debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Cabello's 16th career entry. In New Zealand the song peaked at number 34 on the Hot Singles chart.[6]
